PROGRAM PRESENTATION
The Applied Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition (LAALCM) M.A. Program is an official M.A. program that has been approved and verified by ANECA (National Agency for the Evaluation of Quality and Accreditation) and the AQU (Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency). In 2013, the program received the International Master Program (IMP2013) distinction by AGAUR (Agency for Management of University Research Grants). In 2017, the M.A. program received the accreditation “Excellent” (the highest possible rank) by the AQU.
The program courses address issues in applied linguistics and second language acquisition from multiple perspectives and are taught by internationally oriented researchers who have carried research and have published extensively in these fields. More specifically, the programs covers issues organized into three modules: obligatory content subjects (Advances in SLA, Bilingualism and Multilingualism, Cross-linguistic Influence); obligatory methodological subjects (Introduction to Statistics, Research Tools, Inferential Statistics, Research Methods in SLA); optional content/methodological subjects (Advances in Multilingualism, Analysis of CAF, Language Management in Catalan Territories, CLIL, Specialized Topics in SLA, the Acquisition of L2 Speech, Discourse Analysis, Research Seminar, and L2 Vocabulary Acquisition). The program also requires students to write a 15-credit M.A. thesis. All courses are taught in English.
Students joining the program must complete 60 ECTS credits and they can do so in a one-year (full-time), a year and a half (part-time) or two-year (part-time) configuration.
The LAALCM M.A. program has a strong international orientation with 65% of international students on average taking the program. After completing this M.A. program, students typically continue with doctoral studies both locally and internationally or improve their positions at universities or the private sector.
